People wake up early morning for Surya Pongal in villages, they tie a turmeric plant with the bowl of rice that they have boiled. The rice is prepared with dal and sugar and prepared as a dish called Pongal. In many households, husband and wife dispose the ritual utensils together as a customary practice.
This is the day when the festival actually begins. People tie colourful garlands, beads and bells around the neck of the cow and perform puja. Racing with each others cattle is a common tradition and is one of the most awaited ceremonies in the festival of pongal. Aarti is performed in the temples. The significance of the day goes back to a legend in Hindu mythology when Shiva asked his bull Basava to go to earth and declare that mortals should from then on take an oil massage every day and eat once a month.
But Basava told the mortals that they should eat daily and take a massage once a month. This day holds a great importance among the farmers. The first rice of the season is boiled on this day. New stoves of clay are prepared and the rice sweet pongal is also cooked in a new clay pot. Pongal is cooked until it starts overflowing the pot. Family members gather around it to perform traditional dances. Then comes Mattu Pongal which is celebrated on the third day of pongal on 15 th January.
The idea behind this is to pay regard to cattle which help the farmers in their field. Tamils on this day bath the bulls and cows and paint them nicely before feeding them delicacies. The third day of festive carnival is known as Mattu Pongal which is meant to be the day for cows.
Cows are worshipped after adorning with multi coloured bells, swag of flowers, tinkling bells and sheaves of corn. After feeding cows with Pongal, they are taken to villages. Reverberant sound of their bells attract the villagers and the men organize a race within cattles. In order to wave off the evil eye, aarti is carried out on cows.
Due to joy among people, the atmosphere will also be filled with fun and happiness. The final day of carnival is known as Knau or Kannum Pongal Day. A turmeric leaf is washed properly and is then placed on the ground. The residue of sweet and Venn Pongal, ordinary rice, coloured rice, plantains, betel leaves, betel nuts and two pieces of sugarcane are placed on that leaf by the woman of the house before bathing.
All the women of house gather in the courtyard of their house. In the center of leaf, rice is placed and pray for their brothers family to flourish. With turmeric water, rice and limestone, aarti is carried out for brothers. And this water is sprayed on the kolam in front of the house.
As per the legend, Lord Shiva sent his bull, Nandi to the earth in order to ask the mortal to have an everyday oil massage and bath and to have a meal once in a month. But Nandi promulgated that everyone have an oil bath once in a month and a daily meal. The first day of Pongal is Bhogi festival which is celebrated in the name of Lord Krishna. People lit bonfire and throw old and useless things into the fire which is made of wood and cow dung cakes. People also dance and sing around the bonfire thanking Lord Indra for good harvest.
It is dedicated to Sun God. On the day of Pongal, people boil first rice of the season and dedicate to the Sun. Women wake up early and make kolma, which is rangoli design made out of rice powder. People wake up early morning and tie a turmeric plant with bowl of rice.
