Where is seaham beach




















It's not just the quantity of sea glass here, but the quality You will find it just to the south of Sunderland and east of Durham. There is lots of glass in plain sight, but here's my favorite trick; find a pile of shingle, take of the top layer and reveal dozens of glass shards underneath.

These will often be small, but you will also find larger pieces and some rare colors too. After many years of "surf tumbling" the glass is washed up on Seaham beaches with every tide. Some of the glass is more than a hundred years old, polished smooth by Mother Nature. On 28th March , the vessel sank after hitting a German mine at Robin Hood's Bay, claiming four lives.

The factory itself was put out of business in by competition from more efficient continental producers. Some great finds at Seaham! I have found that Seaham Hall Beach is a great spot with plenty of parking and, more importantly, sea glass! These steps take you from the car park down to the beach. This isn't a problem on the way down, but after a few hours of stooping to pick up beach treasure they can be quite a challenge! This really is the perfect sea glass beach. The bottleworks provided a great source of glass for many years and the tide moves in and out a long way, leaving plenty of pebbles and glass on the beach each time.

And for coffee, I highly reccomend Flamingo Bar and Cafe which is down in the marina. Pair it with a walk around the marina itself and you have a perfect day! The Marina is full of so many businesses and if you wanted to visit the beach there you could have a full day out in one spot.

However, in post-lockdown life there will also be a load of places you can sit in and have a more traditional dining experience.

With indoor seating! Tommy is a stature of a World War 1 soldier created by a local artist. It was initally only supposed to be a temporary feature but the people of seaham raised enough finds to keep it.

Every year of Rememberence Sunday there is always a display here to remember the fallen. It is a really beautiful piece of art and does an incredible job of commemorating the history.

Seaham is a beautiful place and the people who live there take great pride in it! While visiting please remember this especially in the case of littering and leaving rubbish. Make sure to take any rubbish with you or put it in the bins along the paths. Especially dog waste! And do not leave anything on the beaches as it will end up being washed up and into the sea! An alternative option is to use the ones inside the big Asda on the front. And of course, social distancing is still in place so be courtious of this and follow all government guidance.

The area was given heritage status in Seaham Hall — where local celebrity Lord Byron married Annabella Milbanke in — is now one of the best luxury hotels in the North East.

There are, says Gavin, still remnants of coal and iron waste on some of the beaches; and the old names have stuck: Chemical Beach, for example. For large period townhouses, take a look at Ashbrooke or Thornhill on the southern suburbs of Sunderland.
