Scott: Great question. A lot of my book, Make It Matter , is about getting at that conundrum. There are a couple of ways you can create meaning in your work to sustain motivation over time.
I really disagree with that. What do I want my legacy to be? You could also recommit to learning and growing. Training or learning or investing in yourself. If you could recommit to that, I have reams of data that show how meaningful that is to us as human beings and how fundamentally motivating that really is.
How did you do that from a leadership standpoint? Scott: First it starts with caring enough to figure that out for all the people that work for you. What makes me tick? When I had that discussion with individual people, they gave me very interesting answers. This person is really passionate about X or Y. What are their core values and beliefs that are really important to them?
What are [their] superpowers? Some of us are athletes and thrive on keeping ourselves physically active; some of us are musicians and take our instrument of choice; others are painters, artists, mathematicians or science buffs. If you do, then keep doing it. It might require major changes to make it happen.
For those searching, these are the things I have learned from my own quest to find more meaning: most importantly, be patient and kind to yourself. The quest also requires an adjustment to your point of view. Become your own Sherlock Holmes: become interested in what grabs your attention or pulls on your heartstrings.
Remind yourself that this is an individual process and is different for each one of us. Do what works for you in order to get yourself moving. If you feel frozen, take one step— just start moving and remember to trust yourself and the rest will surface.
Once you begin the hunt and move towards your goal, you will run into more experiences and people who support it. Everything has meaning and be sure not to judge what others find meaningful. You want to ask open ended questions where they have to come up with a longer and more detailed answer.
People want to tell you about themselves and if you ask the right questions in the right way, it allows this to happen. One of the best ways to have an awesome conversation is to figure out what makes people tick. Remember that people like to talk about themselves and their lives, so this gives you a good glimpse into who they are.
People will find you interesting if you ask about them and give them the opportunity to talk about themselves. Remember to use the two step system: look for their passion and learn what makes them tick, and then drill down and get into the details.
