We think a lot of the time that we are being judged, instead see it as the casting director allowing, supporting and encouraging you to do your work. Bryan Cranston highlights this emphatically in his book A Life in Parts. When you've delivered the performance with your character perceptions and choices, the casting director may well ask you to do it again but in a different way. Understand that they have a different perception on elements of character, they are not assassinating or judging your performance.
They are looking for your ability to adapt, take direction, and use your imagination to connect with the script and character in a different way. This is your chance to show them how you can work well with a director.
It's another opportunity for you to show what you can do, so be brave and honour this positive move! Embrace it with a positive attitude, and it will be viewed as such! Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. They want you to be good. So if the sides are a two-person scene, expect a dead pan Casting Director to prompt you with flat, unresponsive delivery.
The Director may jump in to give you notes or you may get little more than a glance—in either case, you might still get the job! The important thing is to stay focused on your work and make confident choices.
The casting process for a film or television pilot can take days or months. Episodic television runs on a compressed production schedule, so guest roles tend to be cast fairly quickly. Still, episodes can get pushed, rewritten, or shelved. Whether casting a pilot or guest role, the Casting Director, Creator, Director and Showrunner narrow down their favorites and studio and network executives who oversee the show have final say. In feature films, the Casting Director and EPs may make recommendations but the Director generally finalizes cast, though the financiers can reject those decisions and even pull backing.
And even then some filmmakers threaten, and have, re-shot or digitally altered re-releases to remove or add whole scenes, subplots and characters!
Whether you book the job or not, auditions are your best chance to become known by Casting Directors. If you are successful at the initial audition day you will be invited for a final recall audition at a later date. You must be prepared to answer questions about the entire play from which your selection is chosen. Therefore, an extract will not help in the preparation of the chosen piece, so please make sure you read the whole play. We are not able to discuss the choice of audition material prior to your audition date.
Candidates are asked to wear sensible plain clothes and comfortable flat footwear that provide for a freedom of movement. It is recommended that candidates wear minimal or only natural make-up and also wear only necessary jewellery preferably only earring studs and no rings. We advise candidates to rest well before their audition day. Final recalls will be taking place either at our London campus or online, via teleconferencing software.
Recalled candidates are welcome to choose whichever recall session they wish to attend. You may only be invited to a final recall audition if you have attended an initial recall audition and were successful following it. If you are called for a final recall audition for any of the BA Hons Acting courses, you will normally participate in further intensive workshop sessions involving voice, movement and acting, and focus further on your original choice of speeches and pieces.
Depending on the course you are recalled for and what the panellists wish to see, you may also be asked to present a self-devised theatre piece, a new song or dance, do some sight-reading, work on a scene, and attend an interview session.
Candidates selected for a final recall audition will be notified by email, which will also detail exactly what they will need to prepare for the session. All applicants will be notified of the final outcome of their application through UCAS, which may be several weeks after their audition.
