Nikon d50 what type of memory card

I would think being forced to use 2 GB cards instead of 4 GB cards wont spur Nikon to update the firmware and risk having people screw up their cameras by doing something silly whilst updating. PS I just checked the nikon website for myself and there are no firmare updates for the D50 yet Therefore, technically, you cannot use 4G SD cards on the D However, according to Rob Galbraith's test results, if you format a 4G card elsewhere, you can use it on the D ShunCheung , Nov 9, I seem to remember the D50 manual stating that cards over a certain size 1 or 2Gb are not recommended.

However, while you cannot format a 4G SD card on the D50 itself, Rob Galbraith found out that he can use one on the D50 if you format it elsewhere. The proof is by trial. These cards are limited to 2GB in size or smaller. They are cards that are 4GB or larger. If you need a lens for your camera check out the best Nikon D50 lenses. Buying the highest tier card offered by the manufacturer does not add much to the cost of the card. In return, you'll be much less likely to have a card fail or your data corrupted.

The few problems I've had with SD cards, was when they were generic cards. Being cheap with a memory card invites future problems that could ruin all the data on the card. The D50 uses SD memory cards. Secure Digital SD cards come in 3 different specifications. Each new memory card specification increased the maximum storage capacity of the cards. In order to use the newer standards, the card reader in the camera needs to be compatible. Using a memory card that is larger than 2GB in the D50 will cause an error.

The camera will show that the card is full. If you are having issues with a card that is 2GB or smaller, try formatting the card in the camera. Hi Ben, sorry you got caught out with the 4Gig card. Like me you thought that a modern camera with a modern memory card would be compatible!

From my observations, it would seem that most if not all modern cameras auto format new memory cards on insertion into the camera. As the D50 didn't do this, I should have known that I was up the proverbial creek! On a more optimistic note, the wife treated herself to a new Casio Exilim EX-Z 10Mp camera and as usual, no memory card was provided as standard! Since it took SD cards the same as the D50 she resisted the salesman's patter to buy one "cheap".

Yes happily the camera recognised the card and the photo count shot up way above the 2Gig card. So "the proof of the pudding is in the eating" or to be more precise, does it work? On holiday to China recently, the camera was used in all modes especially video mode, and acquitted itself with honours.

The technology is here Nikon take note so there is no reason except crappy firmware to stop the modern camera from using the latest memory cards.

As a loyal customer I and I am not alone would like to see Nikon update the firmware as technology and customer opinion dictates! If you are as unhappy as me, add your voice to the petition, the link is in blue on this page! Attached Image: Temple of Heaven-Beijing. Just got back from returning the 4gb after reading your posts.

That sucks that Nikon won't release the firmware update. I guess that will have to do; thanks for the info. Besides read speed max, min, avg , there's more critical and often lesser write speed max, min, avg. Also then, there's access time. This is most prevalent on small files as they are being read.

I too, think Nikon should upgrade their firmware, but the reason I guess, is speed. Their multi-shots per second, might go down with FAT Flipping between stored pics, may slow down. Flash is getting faster, not just bigger. I was hoping this will work on my D Stupid me, I should check it out first before. Unfortunately, D50 did not recognize it.

It gave an error CHA. I did not format it first. I should try it. Anyway, adding to the voice of dismay with Nikon, I did sign the petition. Nikon should release a new firmware D D50 is considered an excellent camera much better than D40 or D Upgrading the firmware will keep this camera last longer. This is one of the reason why Nikon's camera including film camera lasts so long. I always think Nikon is the king of all cameras.

Well, maybe this is not a very business idea. If anyone found a solution, please please let me know. This is my first Nikon in my life. I cannot afford it before.

Hope this will last. Nice picture Zardos. I have had no problem at all with a sdhc sansdisk sd card 4 gb card formatted with a Fat32 with a simple card reader on my Laptop. The Nikon D50 linked up to it and I have had noothing but good luck, shooting, deleting, and such.

The D errored on Format of ourse, but the PC took care of it quickly. I have inserted a 4GB non sdhc and the reader showed 1. Hi Mike! I'm glad to hear that you have had some success with your 4Gb SD card. However a word of caution This it will do easily for smaller capacity cards but as I found, very hit-and-miss for 4Gb cards.

This was highlighted when you wrote that the card now contained 1. Since this is the size of a 2Gb card mine when it worked showed a count of 1.

If true then your card would probably be more stable than mine, but I would not recommend re-formatting the card again, or removing and refitting it too many times, or you may find that it stops behaving! Hi Randy! I sit here dumbfounded by your good luck!!! Can you tell me, how did you add the file structure? What was your frame count after you installed the card?
